Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a procedure designed to enlarge and reshape a woman’s breasts. With this technique, implants, either saline or silicone gel-filled, are implanted. Each patient is physically different and may have different goals and wishes.
There are several options to consider when discussing the procedure with your surgeon; these include:
*implant
*type
*size
*pocket location
*access incision location
Your tissue characteristics, body size and shape, activity level as well as your personal preferences all influence the decision you and your surgeon make concerning these options.
When communicating with your doctor it may be helpful to bring a photograph from a magazine or the internet of a woman with breasts similar in size and appearance to those you desire. A frank discussion with your plastic surgeon about the look you wish to achieve will minimize the chance for disappointment.
Breast Augmentation Surgery Explained
The pocket in which the implants are placed may be beneath the breast gland or beneath both the breast and its underlying muscle. There are advantages, limitations and drawbacks with each type of pocket; your surgeon will discuss this with you.
There are several types of surgical incisions that may be used to insert the implants. One type may be located in a crease beneath the breasts; another type is located around the areola (nipple), still another is located within the axillae (underarms). Whichever incision is selected, there will be some scarring. It is usually minimal, but each individual’s healing characteristics ultimately determine the final appearance of the incision. There are important advantages and disadvantages to each incision that your surgeon will discuss with you.
The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. However, it may be performed under twilight sedation and local anesthesia as well.
Breast Surgery Recovery & Aftercare
Discomfort after surgery varies with the technique used and with each patient. You will receive a prescription to help lessen the discomfort during the early postoperative period.
There may be some swelling and bruising as with any procedure, taking varying amounts of time to resolve. This can be improved by wearing a support bra. The bra should be worn for at least the first week after the procedure.
Additionally, continued used of the support bra at all times during the first four to six weeks minimizes the chances that the implants will migrate to an undesirable position.
