Breast Reduction
Reduction mammoplasty or breast reduction reduces the size of abnormally large breasts. The procedure involves removal of excess breast tissue and skin in such a way that the overall size of the breast is reduced and the breast and nipple is lifted into a higher, more youthful position on the chest.
The Langsdon Clinic Breast Reduction Surgery
The incision pattern commonly utilized in our breast reduction surgery is similar to the “anchor” pattern used in some breast lifts. Your plastic surgeon will discuss this with you based on your individual desires and body characteristics.
General anesthesia is usually required. Discomfort after surgery varies with each patient. Although many patients experience surprisingly little discomfort, medications will be prescribed. Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure unless you have significant health problems that require monitoring overnight.
Many of the postoperative considerations for breast reduction are similar to those with breast augmentation or the breast lift procedures. However, because breast reduction is more extensive, there are additional concerns such as:
• Serum or blood collections under the incisions
• Delay in incision or wound healing
• Loss of skin or nipple tissue (this is more likely with very extensive
surgery, obesity, and or smoking)
• General risks associated with surgery
Most patients will have a small drain in place after surgery; this is usually removed after one or two days. Patients may usually return to light normal activities within a week or two.
