Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure designed to remove localized deposits of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure involves the use of a slender tube to suction the unwanted fat. The hips, thighs, abdomen, and neck are the most common areas treated; however, the arms, breasts, back, buttocks, knees, calves and ankles may also be treated.

The best candidates for liposuction are those within 30% of their ideal body weight and who have good skin quality. Because only fat is removed during liposuction, the overlying skin must be able to shrink following the procedure to ensure optimum results.

Liposuction Surgery

Local anesthesia with twilight sedation may be used for liposuction if limited to a small area; however, more extensive fat removal may require general anesthesia. There maybe some transient discomfort after liposuction and medications are prescribed as necessary.

Some patients can return to work or social activities in about a week, but must refrain from vigorous exercise for at least 1 month.

Swelling and bruising are normal and will improve significantly in one to two weeks; it may take two to three months and sometimes longer for near total resolution. Temporary numbness is also common after liposuction.

Depending on how much fat is removed, collections of fluid or blood under the skin and contour irregularities may occur. These post operative issues usually resolve over time. Compression garments are used to minimize swelling and aid the healing process.

Considerations For Liposuction Patients

Skin that has thinned and lost elasticity with age or that has been significantly stretched due to weight gain or pregnancy usually does not maintain a good capacity to contract. When skin does not shrink following liposuction, loose sagging skin may detract from an otherwise excellent result. Sometimes other procedures may be recommended. Your doctor or nurse will discuss what can be done to make your postoperative healing process as smooth as possible.

It must be emphasized that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; rather it is designed for reduction and contouring of localized areas of fat accumulation that are resistant to weight loss efforts. Hormonal abnormalities, lack of exercise, or a diet high in sugars and/or starch may contribute to the re-accumulation of fatty tissue.

Therefore, it is important that each patient review her/his health and lifestyle, since these are important in maintaining the improvement obtained with liposuction.
