Breast Lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is the name of the procedure designed to lift sagging breasts and restore a more youthful contour. Ptosis (sagging) is a normal part of aging but is typically worsened after pregnancy and nursing, or after the gain and loss of large amounts of weight. Even very
young women can have ptosis of the breasts. Once sagging occurs, the breasts will not spontaneously regain an erect, youthful contour.

How is a Breast Lift Done?

The design of your mastopexy procedure will depend upon your specific anatomic characteristics, the amount of sagging and any breast volume loss. If any volume loss has occurred, breast enlargement (with an implant) may be performed at the same time as the lift (mastopexy).

If only minimal breast sagging has occurred, an incision around the areola (nipple), with or without a breast implant, may be all that is required. For intermediate ptosis a short-scar technique (commonly known as a “lollipop” incision) may be needed.

More significant sagging may necessitate an incision with a vertical and horizontal component (commonly known as an “anchor” incision) in order to properly lift and reshape the breasts. Your surgeon will discuss the needed incision during your examination.

Breast Lift Surgery & Recovery

General anesthesia is usually required for breast lift patients. Medications will be prescribed to help lessen any discomfort during the early postoperative period. There may be some temporary swelling and bruising. A support bra will be used for about three months.

Patients must avoiding heavy lifting, aerobics, or swimming for about three months after mastopexy. You may usually return to work in about a week. Incisional scarring usually takes at least two to three months to begin to soften and fade; however, this may take longer.

Although every attempt is made to place the incisions as inconspicuously and as short as possible, it is not uncommon for a portion of the incision to heal less well than other parts. Occasionally a small revision may be needed and can usually be performed as a short office procedure under local anesthesia.

Breast Lift Complications

Complications unique to breast surgery:

• Asymmetry,
• migration of the breast implant,
• capsule formation, or
• breast numbness.

Asymmetry usually occurs when there is a preoperative asymmetry in the breasts; this is present in everyone to varying degrees. Every attempt is made to improve the asymmetry when the enlargement procedure is performed, but perfect symmetry is not a realistic expectation.

Numbness of the nipple, if it occurs, is usually temporary and resolves over time. However, permanent loss of sensation can occur in the nipple or other parts of the breast.
