Sculptra® is approved by the FDA for the treatment of deep nasolabial folds (smile lines). It’s delivered via an injection and has been used throughout Europe since 1999. It’s made from a substance called poly-L-lactic acid. It is used to fill in areas of facial volume loss when injected below the skin surface. Sculptra® injectable is used to treat lipoatrophy or facial fat loss for facial volume loss (deflation).
This is commonly associated with HIV and AIDS. However, facial volume loss is seen to some degree in most of us as we age. The main component of Scupltra, polylactic acid is a natural substance that the muscles create during exercise.
Sculptra® Injectable Procedure
Since your body is already familiar with the substance used in Sculptra®, injections do not need allergy testing prior to treatment. In some cases we may apply a topical numbing agent to your skin before beginning the injections. The doctor will also mix Sculptra® with lidocaine before injecting it to help numb the area treated. Unlike other dermal fillers, Sculptra® is not injected into the skin. It’s injected under a facial wrinkle or hallowing, with even placement. After the injections are made the area will be massaged to help distribution of the product and prevent lumps and nodules from forming.
After Sculptra® Treatment
After treatment with Sculptra®, you may have some minor redness or swelling. However, these side effects are common and will fade quickly. You can resume normal activity the day after treatment. The results from Sculptra® injections are not immediately apparent. The goal of Sculptra® injections is to trigger new collagen production, which can take some time. Most often the results are visible within 6 to 8 weeks. Several treatments may be needed, depending on the amount of facial volume loss being treated. These treatments are usually spaced a month or two apart. That said, it is important to note that unlike other dermal fillers the results from Sculptra® can last up to two years.
How Long Does Treatment With Sculptra® Last?
Sculptra® is considered to be long lasting. In clinical studies, the effects were shown to last up to 2 years after treatment. The main difference between Sculptra® and other filler products is that the results are not immediate. It has a more gradual effect and patients need follow up injections to achieve the desired outcome.
