What Can I Expect in My Ethnic Rhinoplasty Procedure?
Your rhinoplasty will be performed in The Langsdon Clinic’s ambulatory surgical center. In preparation for surgery, you will be given medication to help you relax, promote healing, and minimize post-operative swelling and bruising. Then, anesthesia is used so that you are sleeping during the procedure.
Rhinoplasty is a highly individualized procedure. The exact approach that Dr. Langsdon uses for your surgery will depend on your anatomy and your goals, as determined in your consultation. Before your surgery, he will explain the details of the procedure, including:
- where the incision will be made (either inside the nose or just below the tip of the nose in the narrow ridge of skin between the nostrils)
- how the structure of the nose might be changed by removing, reducing, reshaping, repositioning, or grafting bone or cartilage
The rhinoplasty surgery usually takes about one to three hours for uncomplicated cases. Once you are alert again after your sedation and anesthesia, a trusted friend or family member can drive you home.
What Can I Expect in Recovery After Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
We will provide you with a post-operative recovery plan customized to the unique aspects of your rhinoplasty procedure. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and tenderness at first, but Dr. Langsdon will prescribe medication to help you remain as comfortable as possible. Most patients state they have minimal discomfort and need little medication. To promote healing and minimize swelling, you will need to keep your head elevated during the healing process.
You will need to rest at home for the first week after surgery and avoid strenuous activity for the first few weeks. No excessive exertion is allowed for 4 weeks. Most patients are able to go back to office work or school a week after their rhinoplasty; depending on your individual healing time and how quickly an individual’s swelling subsides. Most of the early swelling will subside after a week or two, but there is usually residual swelling that will take some time. Your results will continue to improve over the next few months, and it can take up to a year for residual swelling to disappear completely.
