Many people today are living longer, healthier, and more active lives—and they want their appearance to reflect how they feel. It’s increasingly common for individuals to explore cosmetic procedures to address visible signs of aging, such as heavy eyelids, facial wrinkles, sagging cheeks or jowls, changes in the neckline, excess skin in the abdominal area, and other breast and body changes.
A common question we hear is, “Am I too old for cosmetic surgery?” The answer is that age alone is not the deciding factor. Chronologic age does not necessarily reflect biologic health or healing ability. Patients who are in good overall health may be just as safe undergoing cosmetic procedures as younger individuals.
What to Consider
Overall physiologic health is key, particularly heart and lung function, physical condition, and general wellness. Just as important is having realistic expectations. As we age, skin elasticity decreases, tissues thin, bones change, and facial volume can be lost. Cosmetic procedures can improve specific concerns and help you look more refreshed and rested, but they cannot reverse every age-related change.
Older patients may take slightly longer to heal and may experience swelling for a longer period of time. In some cases, additional or repeat procedures—such as facelifts—may be needed over time as the natural aging process continues.
There are also trade-offs to consider, including incision placement, scarring, and possible hairline changes. While undergoing procedures earlier in life may offer certain advantages, many older individuals still achieve excellent results and enjoy a more youthful appearance, but he/she needs to understand the limitations.
Choosing an experienced surgeon is essential in terms of both communicating the realities of a procedure as well as the quality of surgery. A medical degree, board certification, or residency certificate alone does not guarantee expertise with a specific procedure. Selecting a surgeon with extensive experience in the procedure you are considering can be beneficial.
